Youth Cricket
Our youth set up is led by Stuart Fisher. Stuart is a first team opening batsmen, and the clubs most consistent run scorer. Over the past decade, Stuart and our other qualified coaches have passed on their knowledge to good effect, with several youngsters graduating to the first team. Youth coaching sessions are held on Friday nights during the season and we field junior teams at various age levels. For more information, please contact our youth section secretary at Peter.McGowan@mundipharma.co.uk
John Wray
It is with enormous regret that I inform you that one of the cricket club's much loved vice presidents, John Wray, passed away peacefully last night.

John had been ill for some time

John had been an excellent cricketer playing for many years as a wicketkeeper in the Chelmsford area where he ran a small holding before buying the farm at Whepstead

John was the club's most loyal supporter and attended almost all our home games, up until a couple of seasons ago he also travelled to most of the team's away matches. He was also a very loyal and generous benifactor

John watched and enjoyed the epic and memorable last game of the season in which Brockley defeated East Bergholt. He stayed till the last ball was bowled!

The club will miss John very much and the Reeds' have very happy memories of the interest and kindness he showed our family.

At this time I have no details of any funeral arrangements

Phil Reed
PLAYERS NEEDED FOR SATURDAY !
Regretfully, Brockley Second Team have conceeded their last three matches, incurring hefty fines. If we conceed another, we risk being expelled from the league. Therefore, it is important that every effort is made to field a team this Saturday (at home to Easton). If you are able to play, please contact Tom Fenner on 07984 767091.
Weekend Washout
All three fixtures from the weekend were cancelled or abandoned. The only play came on Sunday, when Brockley Sunday XI, sponsored by New Life TV, reduced top of the table Walsham Le Willows to 27-2 from 12 overs (D. Sykes 1-5 and I.Reed 1-10) in a reduced 30 overs a side match, before the heavens opened and the game was abandoned.
Youth Cricket 2011 Season
Dear All

The cricket season is now here. We look forward to seeing all the youth each Friday from 29th April onwards. 6pm start. See the attached poster.

It will be a great season. Stu Fisher is back to look after the youth (now he has completed his studies).

Players of all abilities welcome. We have Suffolk county players through to those who just want to have fun.
Some changes from last season:

(1) We now have the full run of the whole playing area so the boys and girls can “practice” in the middle as well as the nets.

(2) We have more volunteers to help at the training sessions (anyone else who wants to help please let Stu or me know – the more the better).

(3) The training sessions will be more structured.

(4) There will be 3 age groups (U11, U13 & U15) and all will play competitive cricket in well established competitions:

a. U11's: Borders league and cup and West Suffolk cup
b. U13's: West Suffolk cup
c. U15's: West Suffolk league and cup

(5) The club also has many senior teams which play on the weekends where we hope a lot of the youngsters will end up playing their cricket (for some it might just be before they play for their country). To help with the transition to senior cricket we have added a development team into a mid week (Wednesday night) adult 20/20 competition (all played locally). The team will comprise of a core of very talented 1st team players (like Stu Fisher, Dean Sykes, Simon Byford etc) and not so talented senior players (like me) along with selected promising young players (at least half the team).
Some things which remain as before:

(1) The bar will be open for those mums and dads who want a quiet glass of beer (or sherry) and a nibble in an idyllic location. Thank you to those who help out here. It is greatly appreciated.

(2) We follow strict ECB guidelines when dealing with youth. Things like ensuring we have some fully trained coaches (level 1 or higher), holding valid CRB certificates and recently attended a good practice child protection course along with recent 1st aid training.

We do hope you come along. Please send this email to anyone else who you think would like to join. Please put up our poster in the schools, village halls etc. Everyone is welcome. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with Stu or myself.

Take care
Peter

Golf Day - Saturday 2nd April 2011
Brockley Cricket Club Golf Day

Saturday 2nd April 2011

The highly successful Brockley Cricket Club Team Golf Day will return on Saturday 2 April. It is open to all players, families, friends, acquaintances and interested parties. The only requirement of golfing ability is that you can procure a set of clubs for use on the day. The day is all about raising money for the club, but also having a jolly good time.

The main format for the golf will be a team stableford competition; with the winner receiving the highly coveted BCC Golf Day Trophy (providing last year’s winner has engraved it and remembers to bring it along on the day!!) Teams will consist of four players, and it is highly recommended that each team consists of one Brockley Cricket Club associate, and three guests of their choosing. In this way we will maximise the number of teams, and also the amount of revenue for the club.

Cost for the day will be the same as last year, £140 per team (£35 per head) to include:

· Coffee/Tea & Bacon Roll on arrival
· 18 holes of Golf
· Two Course Meal & Coffee
· Prizes for teams & individuals (ie longest drive, nearest the pin)

To confirm your entry or to raise any questions, please send me your entry form to:

2011 Two Counties Tables and Stats
The Two Counties League is using a new system to keep track of the league. Rather than phone and email results to the league, match details will now be submitted on Sportstatz. This will make league tables and results available a lot quicker, and will make all manner of league and team stats available to view throughout the season.

Club News

The club held its Annual General Meeting at the Queen’s Head, Hawkedon, on 15th February. Paul Martin will continue in the role of Club President and John Kearney remains Club Chairman. Unfortunately we didn’t have any interest in the role of Club Secretary and these duties will therefore be split between a number of people during the coming year. Isaac Reed kindly agreed to take on the roles of Sponsorship Secretary and Fixture Secretary. Simon Byford will captain the 1st XI ably supported by Dean Sykes as vice-captain. Unfortunately at this stage we don’t have anyone in the role of 2nd XI captain and we will look to resolve this issue before the start of the season. Mark Blackledge continues as 2nd XI vice-captain. Ricky and Dave Meekings have agreed to share the captaincy of the Sunday X1 as last season. Peter McGowan will captain the midweek side which this year will be used as a development XI to help youngsters bridge between the youth section and senior cricket. Mark Blackledge will support Peter as vice-captain. Stu Fisher has agreed to run the youth section again after a break last year. Finally Phil Reed was elected Life Vice-President for his fantastic service to the club over a number of decades.

As we prepare for the new season it is clear that we are a few adult players short of the ideal number we require to be able to turn out three teams each weekend. If you are aware of anyone who is looking for a regular game and would be interested in playing for Brockley, please put them in touch with John Kearney on 01284 735438.

Our pre-season work party will this year take place on Good Friday, 22nd April, starting at 9am. Please make every effort to help out on the day so we can start the season with the clubhouse and ground looking great.

Youth Cricket - County Cricket Comes to Brockley!!

It is surely as recognition of our growing strength at youth level that we have been asked to host the county U14s game between Suffolk and Cambridgeshire on Sunday 31st July. This is a great accolade for our club and we have high hopes that one or two of our lads will feature in the game. Please make a note of the date in your diaries as it would be great to see a really good turnout of support from the club.

The youth section will start on Friday 29th April at 6pm and run through to the last Friday in July. All new players are very welcome to come down and give it a try. Please contact Stu Fisher on 07766 146590 for more details.

April Fixtures

We plan to send everyone a 2011 fixture card before the start of the season but in the meantime here are the fixtures for April:
Saturday 23rd April at 1pm: 1st XI away to Woodbridge
Sunday 24th April at 1.30pm: Sunday XI home to Battisford & District
Wednesday 27th April at 6pm: Midweek XI away to Gestingthorpe
Saturday 30th April at 1pm: 1st XI home to Hadleigh

Annual Club v Church match

The annual club versus church match will take place on Sunday 10th July. As well as the traditional adult match we plan to hold a junior cricket competition between innings in the adult match. Hopefully we can make this a great social event as well as a sporting one. Please put the date in your diaries!

Annual Golf Day

Our annual golf day will take place at the Suffolk Golf and Country Club on Saturday 2nd April. This is an excellent event including a team event over 18 holes, bacon butties before play, dinner and prize giving. If you would like to enter a team of 4 please contact Simon Byford on 07815 956998 or by e-mail at simon.byford@btinternet.com

Bonus Ball

One of our most important means of fundraising is our bonus ball club run by Josie McCaffrey. We still have quite a few numbers available at £1 per week so please call Josie if you are interested (01284 735750).

Pre-Season Pairs Competition
Simon Byford is organising a pre-season get together at the club on 16 April. Everyone is invited, irrespective of the team you play for. The format will be something along the lines of pairs cricket. The match will be informal, but should afford some decent match practice in time for the opening matches of the season. It would be good to get as many people as possible involved. The match will take place on the artificial wicket so remember to bring some trainers.
